Jérémie Gilbert

Jérémie is a professor of social and ecological justice at the University of Southampton whose research focuses on the emerging field of the Rights of Nature.


He is the author of numerous articles and books on the interplay between human rights, ecological justice and the Rights of Nature, with a special focus on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Jérémie joined the Southampton Law School in January 2025 to start a chair on Social and Ecological Justice as part of the university's engagement and teaching on sustainability. Previously, he has been a professor in human rights at several universities, including Roehampton, East London, Middlesex, Ulster and Venice, and has worked for several non-governmental organisations, such as the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi and Greenpeace in both France and Canada. 


As a legal expert, Jérémie has provided legal briefs, expert opinions, and witness statements in numerous cases concerning human rights. He regularly serves as a consultant for the United Nations, notably the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Division for Inclusive Social Development and is a strategic international legal advisor with Lawyers for Nature.
