The International Lawyers Project is delighted to announce that our successful emergency legal support project with Campaigning to beat back a sudden, backdoor ‘lawfare’ attack on 4 million hectares of Kenya’s forests, has been shortlisted for the 2022 PILnet Global Awards under the category of Local Impact Award.
Watch the 3 minute video here describing our impact:
ILP supported the Kenya Forest Working Group (the Coalition), a coalition of 35 respected Kenyan conservation organisations led by the East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS), in pushing back against the proposed Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2021 through a well-coordinated advocacy campaign. ILP supported the Coalition in designing and implementing an emergency advocacy strategy which included supporting the Coalition in making representations to Parliament, proposing international best practice in forest protection policy and providing legal support in preparation for legal challenge of the amendment.
The highly successful advocacy campaign averted the passage of the destructive amendment, thereby ensuring the preservation of Kenya’s protected areas for present and future generations. Together with our pro bono client-partners, the East African Wild Life Society, we plan to continue our work in this area to ensure the amendment is not re-introduced in future and to work on long term sustainable solutions for legislative reforms in the forestry sector.
The winner of the awards will be announced on 18th of October 2022 at the PILnet Global Awards Dinner which will be held at Dublin, Ireland.
